Application for Studierendenwerk Heidelberg Student Halls

Why do I have to apply for a room in a hall of residence at all, you might ask. Well, that's a peculiarity in Germany: the infrastructure for students, i.e. canteens, culture, counselling and also halls of residence, is managed here by the student unions and not by the universities and colleges. A place at university does not automatically guarantee you a room in a hall of residence. You have to apply for such a room with us. Alternatively, you can of course look around on the rental market.

TIP FOR CHOOSING A DORMITORY

If you are studying sciences, you should preferably choose halls of residence with the letters "INF". This is because "INF" is the natural sciences campus in the north of Heidelberg (Im Neuenheimer Feld). You can find information about our halls of residence here.

TIP FOR "UPLOAD DOCUMENTS"

You need proof that you will be a student in order to live in one of our student dormitories. This is, for example, your "Zulassungsbescheid" (letter of admission) or your "Immatrikulation" (certificate of enrollment).

ATTENTION

If you have only just applied for a degree programme and do not yet have the "Zulassungsbescheid" (letter of admission) or your "Immatrikulation" (certificate of enrollment), you can still apply for a room in a dormitory already! In this case, write under "NOTES" that you will send these documents as soon as you receive them!

TIP FOR HEIDELBERG

As a single person, please tick ALL options EXCEPT "family flat" under "preferred form of accommodation" so that you have the best chances with your application. Unfortunately, there are not enough single flats for all students. But even if you live in a WG ("Wohngemeinschaft", shared flat), this is not a bad thing: because you don't have to share your bedroom! Only the bathroom and kitchen are shared with your flatmates.

TIP FOR MAXIMUM AMOUNT OF RENT

Rent in our dormitories ranges between 210€ and 520€. This depends on where the dormitory is located, how large the room is, etc. Rent varies depending on the dormitory. Therefore, please enter a number between 210 and 520.

THE HEIDELBERG GOLDEN RULE

Our dormitories are almost always pretty full. Therefore, it is best to write under "NOTES" that any dormitory is fine, because Heidelberg's public transport is excellent. The city is also safe and, with 140,000 inhabitants, not too big. So even if you live a little outside, you can get to the university quickly. And since our dormitories are almost always pretty full, in principle any offer for a dormitory room is a good offer.

Deutsches Studierendenwerk

Ask the university

Please ask the university or higher education institution whether you might be able to reserve a room in a dormitory through them. Please do this if you are preparing your studies in Germany from home! Depending on the type of programme you are studying, there may be possibilities of obtaining a room that way. If you cannot get a room that way, you will have to look for accommodation in Germany yourself.
