  • fears and personal obstacles
  • depressive moods

How the PCS provides counselling

The 'integrative counselling concept' used by the PCS Heidelberg takes into account the following factors

  • Alliance: developing a supportive personal advisory relationship
  • Behaviour: changing how you deal with difficulties at work or exam stress
  • Cognitions: correcting dysfunctional judgements
  • Dynamics: thinking about unconscious conflicts
  • Existential: talking about existential problems

Anyone looking for counselling is talked through their problematic situations based on psychodynamic criteria and behaviour analysis. Now and again, clients are only looking for concrete information, e.g. if they are making a decision which requires no diagnosis. Crisis interventions and psychotherapeutic consultation follow expert diagnosis and orientational counselling.

The essentials of effective counselling are:

  • relieving emotions
  • encouraging a feeling of self-respect and self-efficacy
  • gaining an insight into how conflicts and crises arise
  • developing constructive ways of dealing with issues
  • using personal and social resources

Students who required extensive psychotherapeutic treatment can be referred to suitable, established psychotherapists.
